Notes from David

I did three major sequences in this movie -- "Beyond The Sea", "Up A Lazy River", and "As Long As I'm Singing", all in collaboration with Rob Ashford. The film itself has been mostly forgotten, mostly because of the ongoing personal travails of Kevin Spacey. But for a long time, when Spotify played "Beyond The Sea", they'd play Kevin's version, and most people were none the wiser, except that I knew it was my extended dance break.

Interestingly, I revisited that song many years later in Season 3 of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, with a similar task: expand seamlessly on the original recording.

I'm particularly proud of my approach to "Up A Lazy River". I had always been fascinated by how the original melody is quite rangy, while Bobby Darin's version reduces it to mostly single notes. I decided to make that a dramatic point in showing how a young Bobby Darin used a single finger to turn that song into a rhythmic tour de force.

The band is led by John Wilson, who has a uniquely brilliant understanding of period swing, and the music was produced by the incomparable Phil Ramone.

Look closely and you'll see future Broadway choreographers JoAnn Hunter and Shannon Lewis in the ensemble. Shannon would, two decades later, choreograph Jonathan Groff's Broadway show about Bobby Darin, Just In Time.
