By journey with Maisel began with the end of Season Two when Shy Baldwin first came on the scene. I played piano for Bill Elliot's glorious Jonny-Mathis-inspired chart of "Younger Than Springtime", and by the end of the session was coaching Darius deHaas, who was the velvety voice of Shy.
There are many glorious things about the Maisel experience -- the commitment to live music, the insistence on having real musicians onscreen playing musicians, and the incredible attention to detail in the arrangements, the sound, the look, the feel. Everyone involved was at the top of their game, and firing on all cylinders. For me, it was heavenly -- I often joke that I should have lived in the late 1950s and early 1960s when music was clever, sophisticated, adult, and most importantly, sexy. Maisel was all that and more.
Season Three had lots of fascinating tasks and challenges -- inserting music into the middle of Bobby Darin's "Beyond the Sea" to go under dialogue, adding instruments to "Don't Monkey With Broadway" so it felt stereo rather than mono, writing a faux 'Playboy After Dark'-inspired theme song for "Miami After Dark", writing a dance piece for the Apollo Theater segment, and doing a slew of arrangements and orchestrations. What a blast. I could love in this world forever.
Most importantly, for me, it was the beginning of a lot of wonderful collaborations in the workd of music on television, and I am grateful to continue to work on various projects with this exquisite music team
