Notes from David
This season was all about The Wolford - the strip club where Midge works. So I did a deep dive into burlesque circa 1960 and found all sorts of fascinating things. The biggest challenge was figuring out how good (or, really, bad) the strip club band - all real players - should sound, and making sure they had an arc as well. Meaning: the band needed to sound better as the season progressed since Midge was making it a better place. LOTS of different approaches taken.
Also had the joy of being on set more this season, and meeting and working directly with the fantastic crew.
Lots of other unique musical things to do -- writing and recording charts for the Chinese-language nightclub being among my favorite.
Another huge aspect of the Dan and Amy approach to music in the series is that there is no underscore per se -- however, there are very musical sequences where everything is choreographed as if it were dance. Sometimes they'd use existing recordings, and sometimes there would be purpose-built arrangements in period style to match the editing. "Racing With the Clock", from Pajama Game, is a perfect example of this. It's not a dance number, but it's filmed with the precision of one, and the music is arranged similarly to a piece of dance music. Another great example of this is the 'Miriam catches a cab' sequence in Season Five -- it started with an existing period arrangement of "I'm a Brass Band" but then the chart was purpose-built to match the filmed sequence.
The other delight that began for me in Season Four was working with Tom Mizer and Curtis Moore, who wrote fantastic original, but period-sounding material for the show. I had the joy of orchestrating their work on quite a few occasions (Although of course Curtis, a masterful orchestrator himself, did many of his own songs as well).
And did I mention that we did this entire season testing daily for Covid and wearing masks?
