Notes from David
My journey into serial television began one fine summer day in 2017 when Adam Schlesinger called me out of the blue. We had worked together on Cry-Baby on Broadway in 2007, and he asked if I wanted to arrange one of the songs he had written for Crazy Ex called "I've Got My Head in the Clouds", which featured a tap duet. Sure! And wouldn't I like to orchestrate it, too? I hadn't been doing much orchestration since moving to NYC in 1990 -- I'd focused instead on being a Music Director and Arranger so that I could be in the room with the actors. But TV is different --songs generally get fully demoed, then pre-recorded. And in the case of Crazy Ex, the songs were written for the specific actors, so the choice of key was already made. So, I dusted off my orchestrating hat, and Adam was thrilled with the result, and that led to me orchestrating all of the "musical theater" songs from that point on, as well as adding string parts to some of the pop songs.
Adam was always dedicated to hiring real musicians, which was a lovely and, in today's world, a rare thing.
For Season Three, I arranged and orchestrated (and usually conducted) the following songs:
- "I've Got My Head in the Clouds" -- a Gene Kelly homage a la "Singing in the Rain"
- "The Buzzing From the Bathroom" -- I loved doing this one. Les Mis all the way, baby.
- "Horny Angry Tango" -- which drew on my experience with doing Evita in London in 2006 and doing a deep dive into authentic tango music. It featured solo accordion and solo violin as musical metaphors for the two characters involved.
- "Maybe She's Not Such a Heinous Bitch After All" - Phil Spector! I even had two guitars for that one.
- "I Feel Like This Isn't About Me" -- a little Jobim.
- "My Friend's Dad" -- a peppy (and creepy) early 1930's romp that drew on my uncredited orchestration of "One Plus One Equals Three" from Side Show
- "This Session is Going To Be Different" - everyone needs to do a "Maybe This Time" parody once in their life. I've done two…
- "Nothing Is Ever Anyone's Fault" - sort of a JRB homage, which is a very deep dive for TV audiences, I suppose.
