This is the project where I started to feel like the old man in the room. Not because anyone made me feel that way, but because it had been 32 years since Damn Yankees had opened at the Old Globe Theatre in San Diego, and 31 since it had opened on Broadway, with me at the podium for the first time in my professional life. And now I'd come full circle -- my title here was "Score Supervisor" which is an intentionally nebulous way of saying that I'd been around a long time and knew a lot of things (or at least had strong opionions) about the show. On of that, I was a direct connection to Richard Adler, whom I had gotten to know quite well between the Broadway revivals Damn Yankees and Pajama Game.
The creative team on this version did a stellar job of keeping the essence of the original 1955 production, folding in elements of the 1994 version, and by setting it in 2000, adding elements that made it speak to an audience now. That, to me, is the essence of what makes a great revival: respect the original, but also acknowledge that audiences and the culture change. This is commercial theatre we're talking about here, and not a museum re-creation. The key is to strip away those elements that were only meaningful to a contemporary audience, but absolutely keep (and celebrate) the elements that are universal. There are plenty of purists who will disagree with that statement. But I can almost guarantee they haven't been through the process of creating an original musical, much less a meaningfull revival.
