Notes from David
Being onscreen was not on my bucket list. When they first asked my about being on camera as the leader for the Gordon Ford Show, I wasn't sure. When they said I'd also be the announcer, I was sold. I've spent my life impersonating radio and TV voices, adopting a mid--Atlantic accent, using stentorian tones, and keeping my tongue firmly planted in my cheek. I had to it. They dressed me to look like the original bandleader on the Tonight Show, Skitch Henderson, who, by the way, had a goatee. So did I. They made me shave mine. No idea why.
In the last episode, there's a brilliant one-shot that follows the action all the way from offstage, through the offices of the Gordon Ford Show, down a set of stairs, through the curtain, and onto the TV-set-within-a-set. The final component was my announcer speech introducing Gordon Ford. After the first take, Reid Scott, who played Gordon Ford, congratulated me for not messing up since it was such a complicated shot. I had no idea, up to that point, that I had the power to derail the whole thing by making an error. That's when I became nervous, and did manage to scramble some words on the take. Somehow everyone survived, and they fixed whatever they needed to fix in post.
Throughout the season, I continued to do my arranging and orchestrating duties, including doing a version of "Shy" for Leslie-Kritzer-as-Carol-Burnett. We filmed that particular sequence right after finishing a bunch of takes with the onscreen band, so I elicited some fun confusion on the part of some of the other actors and crew when I switched into Music Director/Arranger mode while still in costume.
Other highlights of the season included by the 'hands-of-Hank-Azaria' when he sang "Nancy With the Laughing Face"on a Danny-Thomas style sit-com, and the 'hands-of-Josh-Grisetti', as one of the writers of the Gordon Ford show who happened to play piano.
Plus, lots of fun doing charts for an entire industrial with songs by Tom and Curtis. They even had a special edition 45 made of the songs as a gift. Brilliant.
Speaking of gifts, the wrap gift was a dutch oven with the Maisel logo. Paula uses it ALL the time.
I spent a huge amount of time out at Steiner Studios for this season - between the acting part of the gig, and the being on set as a music team member. It was magical, but I don't think I need to do any more long "hurry-up-and-wait" days as an actor. But if you need someone to do announcements in a mid-century TV or Radio announcer voice, I'm there for you.

Note from DC:
The Emmy Award for Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics, while awarded solely to the writers, do in fact honor the Arranger(s), Orchestrator(s), and Music Producer(s) with a certificate of recognition. The Emmy Award for Outstanding Choreography does not recognize anyone on the Music team, but is no less reliant on our contributions, so I include those nominations here. The Emmy for Outstanding Music Direction is currently awarded only for live television events, so Schmigadoon!, for example, was not eligible.
Also, the term “Music Director” cannot officially be used on non-live TV and Film projects due to insecurity on the part of the Director’s Guild of America and their concern that the viewer will be confused by the term “Music Director”. Silly people. Hollywood survived for decades using the term “Music Director” and no one was confused. There is currently no universally accepted and allowable term for what is clearly the position of “Music Director”, which has led to a plethora of terms in use in the industry, none of which are fully accurate.
