As Andrew Gans notes in his review for Playbill, it was an electrifying evening - one night only, with Patti LuPone, Howard McGillin, and Linda Hart from the 1987 Lincoln Center revival reprising their roles. Michael McGrath was a fantastic Moonface, and Boyd Gaines was brilliant as Sir Evelyn Oakleigh. The highlight was undoubtedly when, at the end of "Blow, Gabriel, Blow", Patti decided to do the entire number again. Bobby had staged it so that the lead trumpet player, Chris Jaudes, would come down from the bandstand (which was onstage) and stand center stage and blow to the rafters for the final chorus. So the best moment was when we finished the number the first time, Patti leaned over to me (I was a few feet away) and asked if we should do it again -- then looked to Chris, who shrugged his assent, climbed back up into the trumpet section, sat down, then we started all over from the top.
This is one of those rare things that can open happen in the live theater, and makes the contract between the audience and the performers a unique one -- tonight you are witnessing something that has never happened before, and will never happen the same way again. Magic.
