Notes from David
More amazing songs from Adam and the team that I had the privilege to arrange and orchestrate:
- "No One Else Is Singing My Song" - one of the funniest meta-concepts of the series - a group number, but everyone thinks they're alone.
- "What's Your Story?" -- "Cell Block Tango" with some wry social commentary
- "Time To Seize The Day" - a classic Schlesoinger peppy march. Similar to "I Do Not Know This Person" from The Bedwetter.
- "The Darkness" - dramatic rock at its finest. I just did the strings on this one.
- "Hello. Nice To Meet You" (and its Reprise) - Adam knew how to do earnest and emotional when he needed to.
- "Love's Not A Game" (and its Reprise) - which owes a heavy debt to the 2005 London Guys and Dolls version of "Luck Be A Lady" (tip of the hat to Doug Besterman here).
- "Real Life Fighting Is Awkward" - I added some disco strings. Fun!
- "The Group Mind Has Decided You're In Love" - pure Robert Russell Bennett, including the harp playing rhythm.
- "Sports Analogies" - Dean and Frank, swingin' away, Vegas-style. Plus a very classic Schlesinger out-of-tempo section to undercut it all.
- "I've Always Never Believed In You" - added some rich string pads.
- "Anti-Depressants Are So Not A Big Deal" - I spent a lot of time listening to the opening of La La Land for this one, even making a point of mimicking the overblown bass frequencies. I guess it worked since this song won Emmys for both Best Song and Best Choreography.
- "Eleven O'Clock" - this was a fun challenge -- Rachel literally sang what became the final vocal as an iPhone voice memo, and I arranged and orchestrated around that.
PLUS all the Cats references -- "Nostalgia Cat", "Itchy Cat", "Elated Cat", "Hungry Cat", "Funky Cat". and others - these didn't make it onto the album for fear of Andrew Lloyd Weber's reputation for being litigious. (Btw, this conversation resurfaced during Season Two of Schmigadoon! The lawyers made both Adam and Cinco change melodies out of fear of the Lord).

Note from DC:
The Emmy Award for Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics, while awarded solely to the writers, do in fact honor the Arranger(s), Orchestrator(s), and Music Producer(s) with a certificate of recognition. The Emmy Award for Outstanding Choreography does not recognize anyone on the Music team, but is no less reliant on our contributions, so I include those nominations here. The Emmy for Outstanding Music Direction is currently awarded only for live television events, so Schmigadoon!, for example, was not eligible.
Also, the term “Music Director” cannot officially be used on non-live TV and Film projects due to insecurity on the part of the Director’s Guild of America and their concern that the viewer will be confused by the term “Music Director”. Silly people. Hollywood survived for decades using the term “Music Director” and no one was confused. There is currently no universally accepted and allowable term for what is clearly the position of “Music Director”, which has led to a plethora of terms in use in the industry, none of which are fully accurate.
