This was a fascinating project to work on. I was brought in primarily because of my experience with dance music. The film was fully shot and edited and they were struggling with making the music line up with the choreography in two sequences: "Things Are looking Up" and "Puttin' on the Ritz". Since the movie hasn't been released yet, I can't go into too much detail except to say that it was a fantastically complicated puzzle of finding the right tempos, adjusting the lengths of some sections, arranging/orchestrating/recording new material to line up or be inserted as needed. And hats off to Maggie Gyllenhaal and her unerring eye and ear as a director.
Here's the biggest difference between live dance and filmed dance, at least as far as the music goes: you can add accents or change feels, or even remix levels on film and TV to highlight accents in a more refined way than you can on stage. And once it's wrapped, it will always and forever be that way. Stage is a living, breathing thing that has both the spontaneity and inconsistency of eight shows a week. Joy is to be found in both mediums!
I'm reminded of the first time I watched "Once a Year Day" in the movie of Pajama Game, and I realized that certain musical accents had a slightly different aural quality than others -- they had clearly been added "in post" -- i.e., they were recorded at a later time and presumably different place. Technology has improved, of course, and as he proved so deliciously with me on Maisel, producer Stewart Lerman is a master at assimilating different layers and generations of sounds and recordings to create a seamless whole.
