Notes from David
This is one of my favorite arrangements I've ever done. Rob Ashford and I had the idea of telling Barbara Cook's life story through the songs that she sang -- her arrival onto the scene with "This Is All Very New To Me" , to the peak of her success in "Glitter and Be Gay", through self-exploration in "Will I Ever Tell You" and "Will He Like Me?", to the depths of her struggle with alcoholism in "Losing My Mind", fighting back in "Everybody Says Don't" and "Come Rain Or Come Shine", and culminating in a full celebration of her life and career in "Till There Was You" and "Make Our Garden Grow". We made it flow naturally, musically, and physically. It was an excellent collaboration on all fronts.
And what a joy to be Music Director for this with some of the greatest female singers of all time - Laura, Kelli, Rebecca, Sutton, Patti, and Audra, all of whom I'd worked with many times before and since.
I'm very proud to say that many people consider this the gold standard of Broadway tributes at the Kennedy Center Honors.
I also had the pleasure of arranging and music directing the Meryl Streep segment in the same broadcast, although Anne Hathaway thought I was the water boy.
Rob Berman did a masterful job conducting both the Barbara Cook and the Meryl Streep segments, and shared the Emmy for Music Direction with his Kennedy Center Honors co-Music Director Rob Mathes.

Awards
Winner — Emmy Award
Outstanding Music Direction
- Conducted by Rob Berman and Rob Mathes
- Barbara Cook and Meryl Streep segments: Music Direction and Arrangements by David Chase
NOTE FROM DC:
The Emmy Award for Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics, while awarded solely to the writers, do in fact honor the Arranger(s), Orchestrator(s), and Music Producer(s) with a certificate of recognition. The Emmy Award for Outstanding Choreography does not recognize anyone on the Music team, but is no less reliant on our contributions, so I include those nominations here. The Emmy for Outstanding Music Direction is currently awarded only for live television events, so Schmigadoon!, for example, was not eligible.
Also, the term “Music Director” cannot officially be used on non-live TV and Film projects due to insecurity on the part of the Director’s Guild of America and their concern that the viewer will be confused by the term “Music Director”. Silly people. Hollywood survived for decades using the term “Music Director” and no one was confused. There is currently no universally accepted and allowable term for what is clearly the position of “Music Director”, which has led to a plethora of terms in use in the industry, none of which are fully accurate.
