Notes from David
This production was an absolute joy. I developed all new dance music with Kathleen, and orchestrator Bill Elliott, who understands period swing music like no one else, brought his expert touch to the revised show. One favorite recollection is when I asked Kathleen when we were setting this production. "1934," she said, "just like the original." Bill then asked "Which month?" -- since that was the year that Fletcher Henderson added a fourth woodwind player to his band and changed the sound of swing. (And for those wondering, no, the goal wasn't to have a museum re-creation of mid-summer 1934 swing. But as musicians and arrangers, we want to know these distinctions so that the audience experience feels and sounds exactly right, even if they don't know why.)
This was also a crazy-busy time for me: I was simultaneously rehearsing How To Succeed on a regular 6-day-week rehearsal schedule, and running over to Anything Goes on Sundays to check on the progress there. I couldn't have done with the help of young Music Intern Ian Weinberger, who has since become an excellent friend and collaborator.
Kathleen did a gorgeous and successful re-mounting of this production at the Barbican in London in 2022.
Unfortunately, Concord Theatricals does not rent out the 2011 version of the show, although they advertise it on their website using videos of our production. I've spoken to a lot disappointed folks who have rented what they thought was our version and instead received the t1987 Lincoln Center version. Frustrating. But frankly, I partly got my start arranging because we got sent the "wrong" version of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat when we rented it for a college production, and I had no choice but to make my own version that matched what I thought it should be from having listened to the cast album of the most recent revival. So go find a young and eager future arranger and make lemonade, kids!
