The Boston Pops
There’s a LOT of stuff out there about the Boston Pops' "The 12 Days of Christmas." It’s been called the most successful Pops arrangement since Leroy Anderson’s "Sleighride." I've done a couple dozen Christmas arrangements arrangements and orchestrations for them over the years, and had enormous fun doing them. Some particular favorites besides "The 12 Days of Christmas" are "Home for the Holidays", "Winter Weather Medley", and 2025's "The Friendly Beasts".
I've done lots of other arrangements and orchestrations for them over the years, often for specific occasions and special events - Brian Stokes Mitchell singing "Slap That Bass", or BU Alumni night with "I SIng the Body Electric", and various Partners Health Care nights. And of course, a fun version of "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" where I wanted the Tanglewood Festival Chorus to sing a whole section only using the words "Yankees Suck". It was too much for the proper Bostonians to handle, so they never those alternate lyrics.
I've was music director and pianist for several "Evening at the Pops" concerts (inclduing for Sarah Jessica Parker and Nathan Lane), as well as for a concert version of "On the Town" (directed by Kathleen Marshall) which played both Boston and Tanglewood.
Oh, and I did a lyric for the Dropkick Murphys to sing on Mothers' Day, to the tune The Wellerman Song.
I've loved working with Keith Lockhart over the years, and also with the Director of Artistic Planning Dennis Alves, who retired last year. I've had the great pleasure of writing parody lyrics celebrating both of them! Also, a special shout-out to filmographer Susie Dangel for being a constant collaborator on many Pops projrcts!
